[Original 116 year old first editions] A massive undertaking 4 years in the making (1898 - 1902). Collection of 12 string tied portfolios with 432 plates (see below for description). These are illustrated with line and measured drawings photographic views of interior and exterior of buildings and other text illustrations. Detailed text on the history of each building, area and state from the early part of the 18th century up to the late 19th century. Although the bulk of the work is concerned with American architecture, it also contains a number of English buildings, some dating to the mid 17th century. From the library of Alfred Barmore Maclay (1871-1944), with his bookplate in each volume. Maclay, a wealthy banker and financier and an amateur landscape architect.
