This is an antique history of George Washington the soldier.
Not Washington the surveyor. Not Washington the President.
Washington the soldier. The General. The Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. The military genius who heroically led a disgruntled and poorly-equipped volunteer army to victory over the British, the most efficient fighting force on Earth.
This book follows George Washington from his early years as a soldier through his entire command as leader of the American forces in the Revolutionary War. It is illustrated with portraits and maps.
WASHINGTON THE SOLDIER is a military history written by a military man. Author General Henry B. Carrington was well-qualified to undertake a work of this nature and magnitude: Not only was he a lawyer and professor, but also a Colonel and Brigadier-General in the United States Army during the American Civil War and in the 1866-68 Indian war known as “Red Cloud’s War.” A noted engineer as well, Carrington constructed forts along the Bozeman trail during the latter conflict. He built and personally manned the wilderness outpost Fort Philip Kearny, near which occurred the “Fetterman massacre” in which U.S. 80 troops were killed by Indians. Carrington was initially blamed for the massacre, but was later exonerated by a court of inquiry and a separate investigation by the Department of the Interior.
Carrington’s military experiences in the 19th century gave him the insight and expertise to critically analyze the battles of the American Revolution a hundred years earlier. His long years in the field and on the march endow this book with an authoritative quality that easily surpasses the efforts of mere historians.
