1899 MARDI GRAS REX KREWE PARADE FAVOR ANTIQUE BEVELED HAND MIRROR 118 YEARS
I\'ve had this mirror for several years and have enjoyed fantisizing about it. It\'s your turn. It comes from the 1899 New Orleans LA Mardi Gras Rex Krewe as a favor or souvenir from what turned out to be the coldest Mardi Gras in history. It is a very ornate gold tone light metal hand mirror with a shield shaped beveled mirror on one side and Carnival Rex 1899 New Orleans embossed above and across the top of the mirror with an embossed crown above that at the top center point of the hand mirror. There are continuous royal flavored designs over the entire surface including swirls, vines and leaves.
The backside reveals what looks like it might be the Rex coat of arms with a toga draped man at each side. The remainder of this side has the same swirls, vines, leaves and crown as does the front. I am sure the crowns represent the fact that Rex is the king of the Mardi Gras Carnival. Overall this hand mirror is in very good condition for being 118 years old. The silver in the mirror appears intact but there are some very small scratches on the glass. The metal finish is not worn and retains a patina, which does actually add to its character and mystic, but I am certain it could shine. I have not polished it but there appears to be a polish residue in some lower areas of design. There is a small rise on the mirror bezel midway down on the right side. I think that it is part of the bezel fold around the glass and not a dent (photo 12). The hand mirror measures 6 1/2\" tall and 3 1/2\" at the widest point.
This Rex favor is a very unique piece of historycommemorating an annual New Orleans festivity that many from around the world attend and celebrate. Also with this rare find comes a history of bringing considerably more at various sales, included. Of course, it will ship free with adequate insurance.
