18th Century BLACK BASALT Bust MATTHEW PRIOR Possibly Wedgwood

Offered for sale is this 18th century English basalt bust of the poet Matthew Prior. It\'s a very finely detailed piece. It is marked only \"PRIOR\". During my research, I came across a strikingly similar bronze bust of William Congreve sold by Christies. The notes for that sale indicated that there is a companion bust of Matthew Prior with the same fine details. Both busts were attributed to John Cheere. You can see the similarities in the Christies sale listing HERE. If you click on the \"NOTES\" tab, you can read about the companion Prior bust. This is a very fine quality and rare piece, probably modeled after the bronze by John Cheere. Please excuse the reflections in the pictures.

SIZE: The bust is approximately 8 inches tall.

CONDITION: Thereis a chip on the lower front corner - the pen is pointing to this in the close up picture, and some flaking and flea bites around bottom. There is one flat spot on the collar of his shirt but Icannot tell if it\'s a chip or if it was made that way (the surface/glaze is shiny therematching the rest of the figure).
