Wonderful Mid to Late 18th Century Iron Utensil Rack - Please Click the Images for Detailed Enlargements!

Truly the best when period utilitarian objects couple themselves with the folk artistry of blacksmithing work. This circa 1760-1790 rack is one of the best we have seen in quite some time! a piece we purchased from this past June\'s Madison Bouckville Antique Show from a great collection of Early Iron Ware (see other examples up this week on buy it now sales!)

Racks such as this were made to support various items around a country estate. More often than not with see examples referred to as \'game racks\' as caught game and/or fowl would sometimes be hung off one of the hooks before it made its way into the kitchen. Racks of this sort were also kept close to kitchen areas/hearths to support the hanging loops of various cooking tools such as spoons and spatulas.

As you can see all the signs of period blacksmithing are evident including forged rivets, etc. Perhaps though the most alluring aspect of the piece is the series of curled decorative elements that adorn it, each of the three designs are most interesting in nature! They bear similiar designs to many period betty lamp holders we\'ve offered in the past. The piece also has some \"floral\" inspired designs on each end with four open petals. Three hooks remain below each of the designs.Another aspect we have never seen is this piece has \"loop\" areas on the reverse were it would have been fitted over nails or spikes to hang in a home.Truly a marvel of blacksmith artistry.

Overall the rack measures just over 18 1/2\" wide, 5 3/4\" tall, with each of the three hooks standing out about 1\".Design portion on the left and right elements are a tad loose and do rotate a little, nothing that would affect the display, but worth mentioning.

Some slight pitting from age as one would expect. There is blackening and some soot to the piece from age as well. We have not cleaned this piece it is in great original rustic character original condition. This was purchased from an old time dealer/collector who was parting with pieces he held onto for decades. This is a fresh to market piece I puchased alongside other items while the dealer was unpacking his van during the recent Upstate NY show.

This period rack is offered on a buy it now option!

Thanks for visiting Foxrun-Farms now in our 19th year on . We offer weekly selections of early American folk art and primitives.
