McKinley defeated William Jennings Bryan for the second time by campaigning from the front porch of his home in Canton, Ohio. His Republican, railroad owning friends, would set up \"Special Trains\" and fill them with \"Delegations\". Every day was Parade Day in Canton!

Roosevelt on the other hand, proved highly energetic, and an equal match for Bryan\'s famous barnstorming style of campaigning. He had been McKinley\'s Assistant Secretary of the Navy until the Spanish-American War broke out. He resigned to form the \"Rough Riders\" and charge up San Juan Hill. After the war he was elected Governor of New York. McKinley\'s original Vice President, Garret Hobart, had died of heart failure in 1899.

Weight: 1.60 Gram, 22 Millimeter, Metal.
\"A Guide Book to United States Medals and Tokens\" by Katherine Jaeger. (General Reference).

Obverse: William McKinley & Theodore Roosevelt.

A quote from when Mark Hanna, who was McKinley\'s friend and chief advisor, heard about Roosevelt becoming the Vice Presidential candidate. \"My God, you would place that madman a heartbeat from the Presidency!\" Sadly, McKinley was assassinated six months into his second term. More below.

Reverse: THE • WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO. • NEWARK N. J. • Union \"Bug\" • PATENTED • JULY 17, 1894 • APRIL 14, 1896. JULY 21, 1896.

The Whitehead & Hoag Company of New Jersey was organized in 1892. There were several hundred persons employed by the company in the manufacture and sale of buttons, badges, banners, Flags and an almost infinite variety of advertising novelties in celluloid, metal, ribbons, silk and woven fabrics (all collected today). Mr. Benjamin S. Whitehead was the president and Mr. Chester R. Hoag, the vice president. The company insisted on making a top quality product and refused to advertise any other way than on their own product. It was eventually sold to Bastian Brothers and the factory was closed in 1959.

The Button: A fully original example, it has passed through some hands and has some small defects. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.

Remember, FREE SHIPPING to the USA! Due to the bulkiness of this piece, a padded envelope is mandatory so out of the US shipping will be at postage cost, as determined by the calculator for your location, nothing extra added.

More interesting stuff about McKinley and Roosevelt: When Roosevelt was Under Secretary of the Navy, he was responsible for sending Admiral Dewey to the far east. Roosevelt knew war was coming and he knew Dewey was a \"fighting\" admiral. \"You may fire when ready, Gridley\".

McKinley did not want war with Spain and after the war had this to say about the acquisition of the Philippine Islands. \"If only Dewey had sailed away!\" Instead, he had to meet and greet the now hugely famous Admiral when he got back to the United States. Dewey landed in New York and by the time he got to Washington his right hand was in agony. McKinley did him the favor of showing him how to avoid getting his hand mashed when meeting the public.
