The Odin J Oyen collection represents the very best of early Midwest artwork spanning the 1880’s through 1931. Born in Trondhjem, Norway in 1865, Odin started his design firm, Odin J Oyen Designs in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1888. His dream and goal was to provide the relatively young Midwestern States much needed Arts and Culture.

His design firm included designs across the Midwest

  • Court Houses
  • Theatres
  • Churches
  • Bars/Tavern
  • Banks
  • Fraternal Clubs
  • Restaurant
  • Lodges
  • Hotels
  • Residential Interiors.

This collection is an integral part of the history of Midwest Americana…

  • Minnesota
  • Wisconsin
  • Iowa
  • Indiana
  • Arizona
  • Wyoming
  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota

Many of the historical places where he and his artisans created murals for, have long since been torn down or redecorated, so this unique bit of history has been preserved, here, in their original drawings, watercolor and oil renderings. Oyen lived in a very exciting time in American Art history, opening his firm up shortly after the Civil War until 1931. (Depression put his son Leighton Oyen out of business)

These renderings represents Victorian, Art Nouvea, Arts and Crafts, and Art Deco periods, but Odin and his family were also world travelers, so not only do we have hundreds of pieces of original works from the Oyen firm, but hundreds of lithographs, steel engravings, prints, and original artwork from other artists… all from that time period!
