Two of Rostond\'s plays, including his famous Cyrano de Bergerac, attractively bound in quarter calf.

EdmondRostand was a French poet and dramatist.He is associated with neo-romanticism, and hisplays provided an alternative to the naturalistic theatre popular during the late 19th century. One of Rostand\'s works, Les Romanesques, has been adapted as the highly successful musical comedy The Fantasticks.

Chantecleris notable in that all the characters are farmyard animals including the main protagonist, a chanticleer, or rooster. The play centres on the theme of idealism and spiritual sincerity, as contrasted with cynicism and artificiality. Much of the play satirises modernist artistic doctrines from Rostand\'s romanticist perspective.

Cyranowaswritten in 1897. Although there was a real Cyrano de Bergerac, the play is a fictionalization of his life that follows the broad outlines of it. The entire play is written in verse, in rhyming couplets of twelve syllables per line, very close to the Alexandrine format, but the verses sometimes lack a caesura. It is also meticulously researched, down to the names of the members of the Academie Francaise and the dames prcieuses glimpsed before the performance in the first scene.

Chantecler was pubilshed in 1910. Cyrano de Bergerac in 1921. They are bound here as a pair.

CONDITION

In a quarter morocco binding. Externally smart, with light shelf wear and a little fading to the spines. Internally the pages are generally clean. The edges are untrimmed. Firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED
