Offered is an original Mutoscope reel, subject # 7464, titled \"Moonshiners Midnight Riot\". This reel will work on all types of Mutoscopes....clam shell, Indian, large and small sheet metal, and all others, except the \"multi-reel\" machine, which uses inverted pictures.
Since the turn-of-the-century, Mutoscopes have been a primary attraction in penny arcades, boardwalks, train stations, fairgrounds and other places the public gathered. They offered a glimpse into a world not yet available to most of the public. In the early days, these machines operated before radio, tv, silent movie theaters and cinema theatre. It was a chance for a patron to lose themselves, if only for a moment, in the story told inside the machine.
This reel is a western theme, with a bar room brawl, which was a popular \"Vaudeville\" style skitduring this era. There may be a popular actor featured in this reel, as several close ups occur, but I don\'t know the actors from this period to be certain. The story is filled with action andsuitable for all ages. The marquee card is hand painted by a sign painter to match the theme. The title on the card is different from the title of the movie. This was done intentionally, whenan operator did not want to reveal the subject matter directly, but instead created a \"teaser\" title to provoke a patron to watch.
The reel is in very good condition. There is the normal wear from age and use. Some of the cards have minor creasing, but nothing that detracts from the play appeal.
