1920s FAP\' ANIS APERITIF ORIGINAL VINTAGE VERY LARGE POSTER 62\" x 46\" Art Deco:
$1299.99

I picked up this beautiful advertising poster, along with a handful of others shown in the last photo, back in 1999. Having studied graphic design and advertising in college, and then working as a designer and art director, I recognized the beauty and importance of original advertising posters and prints whether old or new. This is one of the old ones I just could not pass up!

My intention was to have it framed, but like many of the posters and artwork I\'ve collected, it has enjoyed a quiet life tucked away in a protected area away from light and heat.

It is completely original, and I really had a heck of a time photographing it...it\'s nearly as wide as a king sized bed!

More Particulars:

  • This very large, colorful 1920s French poster advertisement, illustrated by Henry Delval, was for a Pastis aperitif called Fap\'Anis. The creation of Pastis was aresponse to the banning of its infamous, anise-flavored cousin, absinth inFrance in 1915.
  • The flapper enjoying a panoramic vista of the French Riviera is purported to have an equally intriguing tale. The woman, according to my research, is Gaby Deslys, bornMarie-Elsie-Gabrielle Caire, originating from Marseille (short for\"Gabrielle of the Lilies\"), a dancer, singer, and actress whoachieved fame on two continents.During the 1910s she was exceedinglypopular worldwide performing in Paris, London, New York, among others, andmaking $4,000 a week in the United States alone. During the 1910s she performedseveral times on Broadway. Her dancing was so popular that the ragtime dance “TheGaby Glide” was named for her.
  • Between 1911 and 1915 she appeared in at least five Broadwaymusical revues and extravaganzas, three of which were at the Winter GardenTheatre:The Revue of Revues(1911),Vera Violetta(1911-12)andThe Honeymoon Express(1913-14). She also performed inTheBelle of Bond Street, andStop! Look! Listen! While in theU.S., she performed in an American-style striptease, which she also introducedto the European stage. During World War I, she worked as a spy for theFrench.
  • Renowned for her beauty she was courted by several wealthygentlemen including King Manuel II of Portugal, who was said to have given hera pearl necklace worth $70,000 (valued at more than 10 times that amounttoday). Gaby loved pearls and claimed before she died at the age of 39 ofillness in 1920 that she owned a collection of them equal to her own weight.
  • Marseille the home of Pastis, and where Fap\'Anis wasproduced, made it a natural fit for this local girl.
