In an America where the KKK was widely regarded as a patriotic civic organization, it is not surprising that the presidential election of 1928 was sullied by bigotry. The Republican nominee, Hoover, was Protestant; his Democratic challenger, Alfred Smith, Catholic. Supporters of Hoover were quick to capitalize on religious intolerance and suggest that Smith was, by virtue of his faith, somehow less American. The point is made in a backhanded fashion by this pinback.
