A GUARANTEEDAUTHENTIC 8 3/8” long handwrittencheck by Maxfield Parrish to one of his closest friends, George S. Ruggles.Ruggles (1859-1931) was a neighbor of Maxfield Parrish, both of them living inPlainfield, New Hampshire. Ruggles’ signature is on the reverse endorsing thecheck. The check is dated December 26th, 1924.

Ruggles was his chiefcarpenter for more than thirty years and supervised twenty-five workmen as theybuilt Parrish\'s home,\"The Oaks\"with its studio, barn, and otheroutbuildings.

George Ruggles alsoworked as artist\'s model: he sat for a Life Magazine cover in 1922, titled\"TEA? Guess again.\" Ruggles was also the model for a servant carryinga tray of Jello to the king and queen in a 1921 Genesee Pure Food Company ad,\"The King and Queen Might Eat Thereof and Noble Men Besides.\"

Ruggles walked fromhis home through the woods to Parrish\'s house everyday.

In a local historybook, Choice White Pines and Good Land, there is a paragraph thatdescribes the relationship between George Ruggles and Maxfield Parrish. In the 1927 The Mentor magazine\"Dreams Come True in His Workshop\" Charles Merrill wrote:

‘”On the mechanical side of his activity, Mr.Parrish has a partner, Mr. George S. Ruggles. For twenty seven years, they havetoiled together in that shady New Hampshire retreat. They are inseparable, morelike bosom chums than employer and employee. They have been together so longthey have come to look like each other. \"Take his picture and call itme,\" said Parrish when I had secured my much coveted interview and wanteda snapshot to accompany it. Mr. Ruggles speaks highly of his associate\'sability in mechanical lines. \"He could earn his own living as a mechanic,\"Mr. Ruggles tells you. \"It\'s true that it runs in his family. His boys areall clever with tools. They have shops of their own here, and they like thatkind of work just as much as their father. \"The fact is,\" adds theman who has been closer to Maxfield Parrish than any other for almost threedecades, \"Mr. Parrish is an exceptional man in more ways than one.”’

The two buddies --Parrish and Ruggles -- enjoyed going to Dartmouth College football gamestogether. Parrish would put on his big raccoon coat, pick up George in a bigcar and head north up Route 12A to Hanover, New Hampshire.

When Ruggles grew tooold to do the heavy work, the local history reports, he made picture frames forpaintings created by Maxfield Parrish and his father, Stephen Parrish.

The check has a strong Parrish & Rugglessignature and is in very nice condition witha vertical center fold in it, lightaging, small holein the \"R\"in \"Ruggles\" and a slight smudge on the signature. A very nice addition to anycollection.
