1935 George V Silver Crown Here is a highly collectable example of this iconic British silver coin. I particularly love the design on the reverse of these beauties. Theconservative British public at the time of their issue in 1935 were typically reserved aboutthe modernist look by Percy Metcalfe. It is very much in the art deco stylewhich actually had been around for some years by 1935. Nevertheless those who took adislike to it gave it the nickname, Rocking Horse Crown, which has endured tothis day.The familiar obverse portrait of George V was drawn and engraved by Sir Bertram MacKennal, an Australian sculptor, whose initials, BM, appear on the truncations of all British coins bearing the portrait of George V. He died in 1931, but as can be seen from this coin, his legacy lived on. And let\'s not forget what a lovely edge these coins have with the incuse Latin inscription DECUS ET TUTAMEN which means an ornament and a safeguard and ANNO REGNI XXV commemorating the 25th year of the reign of George V.

This is a very fine example of thisbeautiful solid silver coin with commensurate circulation wear, scratches and marks mostly only visible under magnification and one small edge ding only visible on the obverse at around 8 o\'clock (the small extent of this ding can be seen on the second edge image)

To my mind however, the design is so strong and aesthetically pleasing, that any minor imperfections like this become secondary in importance. We see so many of them being traded I think we sometimes forget what arelatively rare coin it is - only just over 700,000 were minted, so there\'sdefinitely not enough for one each! So if you haven\'t got one, this might beyour chance to pick up an excellent example without paying silly money.

It is 38.6mm diameter and weighs 28.4g of 0.500 grade silver.

It\'ll be a low start and a sale as usual.
