About the Ship:

HMSPrince of Wales

BritishBattleship ~ King George V Class

Commissioned;19 January 1941

Sankin combat by Japanese Aircraft; 10 December 1941

The Prince of Wales participatedin the Battle of Denmark Strait against the German Battleship Bismarckand the Heavy Cruiser Prinz Eugen.

Commissioned in 1941, the Prince of Wales fought the GermanBattleship Bismarck when the Bismarck and the PrinzEugen broke out into the Atlantic in May 1941.

In that battle, HMS Hood was hit by fire from the Bismarckand exploded, immediately sinking with only three out of nearly 2000crewmembers surviving. The Prince of Wales was also hit by theGerman ships and damaged, but she had also damaged the Bismarck.

Several days later the Bismarck was tracked down by otherBritish warships and was sunk attempting to make for the safety of Germancontrolled bases on the French coast.

Princeof Wales was transferred later in 1941 tothe Pacific to protect British interest, the British outpost at Singapore, anddeter Japanese aggression.

It failed. After the Japanese attack on United States Fleet at PearlHarbor on Dec 7th 1941, utilizing land based aircraft, the Japanese attackedthe Princeof Wales and the British Battle Cruiser Repulse, off the coast ofMalaya on December 10th, sinking them both.

It was the first time a modern \"Super\" Battleship wassunk by airpower while underway and at sea and was the end of the Battleship asthe Capital Ship Force of any Navy.
