A fedora is a felt hatmost commonly worn by men. A few fedoras have names of their own, including thetrilby. The hat is typically creasedlengthwise down the crown and \"pinched\" in the front on both sides.Fedorascan also be creased with teardrop crowns, diamond crowns, center dents, andothers, and the positioning of pinches can vary. The typical crown height is4.5 inches (11.4 centimeters). The brim is usually approximately 2.5 inches (6.3centimeters) wide, but may be wider, can be left \"raw edged\" (left as cut), finished with a sewn overweltor underwelt, or bound with a trim-ribbon.The term fedora was inuse as early as 1891. Its popularity soared, and eventually it eclipsed thesimilar-looking Homburg. Fedoras can be found in nearly any color, but black, grey, tan (\"fawn\"), and dark brown are the most popular. The word fedoracomes from the title of an 1882 play by dramatist Victorien Sardou, Fédora, written for Sarah Bernhardt. The play was first performed in the United Statesin 1889. Bernhardt played Princess Fédora, the heroine of the play. During theplay, Bernhardt, a notorious cross-dresser, wore a center-creased, soft brimmedhat. Womens-rights activists adopted the fashion. Men began to wear them withcity clothes after 1924, led by Britain\'s Prince Edward, the most influentialman of fashion in his day. It was popular for its stylishness and its abilityto protect the wearer\'s head from the wind and weather. Since the early part ofthe 20th century, many Haredi and other Orthodox Jews have made black fedorasnormative to their daily wear.Fedoras have become widely associated withgangsters and Prohibition, which coincided with the height of the hat\'spopularity in the 1920s to early 1950s. In the second half of the 1950s, itfell out of favor due to a shift towards more informal clothing styles.Thefedora enjoyed a revival only a few years after its waning popularity, datingback to the mid-1970s. The fedora as a personal statement has made impacts onAmerican and global culture: Indiana Jones popularized his fedora in the IndianaJones franchise. Among historical figures: legendary college football coachPaul Bear Bryant could be seen, on national television, roaming the sidelineswearing his trademark plaid and hounds-tooth fedoras. He also appeared on thecover of TIME magazine wearing a fedora under the banner: SUPERCOACH. Anothercoach associated with the fedora is Coach Tom Landry, who wore the hat while hewas the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. It would later become his trademarkimage. A cenotaph dedicated to Landry with a depiction of his fedora was placedin the official Texas State Cemetery in Austin at the family\'s request. Inaddition the Cowboys wore a patch on their uniforms during the 2000 seasondepicting Landry\'s fedora. Author Terry Pratchett is known for having thefedora as a normal part of his image. In music, Michael Jackson frequently worea fedora in public appearances, concerts and video clips. In the televisionseries Fringe, the mysterious figures, the Observers, all wear fedoras.
