GeorgeVI (Albert Frederick Arthur George; 14 December 1895 - 6 February 1952) wasKing of the United Kingdom and theDominions of theBritish Commonwealth from 11 December 1936until his death. He was the lastEmperor of India and the firstHead of the Commonwealth.

As the second son ofKing George V, he was not expected to inheritthe throne and spent his early life in the shadow of his elder brother,Edward. He served in theRoyal Navy andRoyal Air Force during theFirst World War, and after it took on the usualround of public engagements. He marriedLady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923 and they hadtwo daughters,Elizabeth andMargaret.

George\'s elder brother ascended the throne as Edward VIII upon the death oftheir father in 1936. However, later that year Edward revealed his desire tomarry the divorced American socialiteWallis Simpson. British Prime MinisterStanley Baldwin advised Edward that forpolitical and religious reasons he could not marry a divorced woman and remainking.Edward abdicated in order to marry, and Georgeascended the throne as the third monarch of theHouse of Windsor.

During George\'s reign the break-up of theBritish Empire and its transition into theCommonwealth of Nations accelerated. Theparliament of theIrish Free Stateremoved direct mention of the monarch fromthe country\'s constitution on the day of hisaccession. Within three years, the Empire and Commonwealth, except the IrishFree State, was atwar withNazi Germany. In the next two years, war withItaly andJapan followed. ThoughBritain and its allies were ultimatelyvictorious, the United States and theSoviet Union rose as pre-eminentworld powers and the British Empire declined.After theindependence of India and Pakistan in 1947,George remained as king of both countries, but the title Emperor of Indiawas abandoned in June 1948. Irelandformally declared itself a republic and leftthe Commonwealth in 1949, and India became a republic within the Commonwealththe following year. George adopted the new title of Head of the Commonwealth. Hewas beset by health problems in the later years of his reign. His elderdaughter, Elizabeth, succeeded him.
