1946 Judaica ILLUSTRATED CURRENT NEWS broadside with photo - HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS Palestine- inv # pict Aug2014X13

SEE PHOTO-----COMPLETE, ORIGINAL17\" x 14\" pictorial news broadsides (blank on the back), the Illustrated Current News(NY, NY) dated in Dec, 1946. This \"end of year\"news broadsideshows the most important events of 1946- 2 Atomic Bomb Tests, Jewish Holocaust survivors / refugees in a displaced persons camp in Cyprus after being denied entrance to Palestine, the main Nuremberg Trial of the top Nazi leaders, and much more.

These pictorial news broadsides were primarily produced and used between 1920 and 1963 to show the news as a displayable picture in the era before television. These illustrated news broadsides were displayed in retail store windows for passerbys to see the latest news in a visual form (note that they even look like a television screen circa 1940\'s). They were changed in the store window on a regular basis (daily or weekly) by the Pictorial News representative visiting the stores.

For many years I have been looking for the platform or mechanism that retail stores used todisplay these pictorial news broadsides and last month, I finally located oneof the device used to display them in store windows. This device was a 25\" x 22\" wooden stand that had an opening in the back measuring 20\" x 12\" (the size of the news broadside) where the broadsides could be changed on a regular basis. There is space at the bottom of the stand for advertising by the local store merchant using changeable white letters on a black velvet background. The news broadside was useful to the merchant in havingpeople stop at the store window to see the latest news in visual form (remember, this was BEFORE the widespread advent of Television). The customer would stop and be \"drawn\" into the merchandise shown in the retail store window, thus increasing foot traffic in his store and thus increasing sales. I am sure that the pictorial news broadsides were also taped to the inside of some store windows as well but I have never seen documentation of that.
