This stamp was first issued on July 4, 1957 and was the first time that the American Flag was used as the central design on a stamp. The 48 star United States Flag stamp was the first to be printed on the Glori press, which allowed for 3 different colors to be printed simultaneously.
The 48 star American Flag was the longest lasting Flag design. It remained the same from 1912, when Arizona and New Mexico were added as states, to 1959, when Alaska became the 49th state.

- There is a slight indent on the fact card from where raised stamp area pressed against it in storage (scan shows it as darker print, but print is all the same color)
- Name/Address of prior owner on envelope (covered for privacy)
