GenrikhSaulovich Altshuller (Ге́нрих Сау́лович Альтшу́ллер,) (born Tashkent, Uzbek SSR,USSR, 15 October 1926; died Petrozavodsk, Russia, 24 September 1998), was a Sovietengineer, inventor, scientist, journalist and writer. He is most notable forthe creation of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, better known by itsRussia acronym TRIZ. He founded the Azerbaijan Public Institute for InventiveCreation, and was the first President of the TRIZ Association. He also wrotescience fiction under the pen-name Genrikh Altov Working as a clerk in a patentoffice, Altshuller embarked on finding some generic rules that would explaincreation of new, inventive, patentable ideas. He eventually created the TeoriyaResheniya Izobreatatelskikh Zadach (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving or TRIZ)).During one of Joseph Stalin\'s purges he was imprisoned for political reasonsand continued his studies with his fellow inmates while in a labor camp. Afterhis release, Altshuller settled in Baku, Azerbaijan. Thespread of TRIZ in the Soviet Union A full-fledged TRIZ movementdeveloped among Soviet engineers and other technically inclined people by the1970s, and Altshuller played the role of its intellectual leader. He lecturedat TRIZ congresses, published articles and books and corresponded with variousTRIZ practitioners. He became the founding member and president of the RussianTRIZ Association. A number of his close friends and students have become themost prominent thinkers and teachers of the movement, popularizing TRIZ in Russiaand abroad. For a long time he published articles on TRIZ, with examples andexercises, in the Soviet popular science magazine Izobretatel i Ratsionalizator(Inventor and Innovator). After the Sovietcollapse Altshuller left Baku in the early 1990s amidst post-Soviet-breakupviolence in the area. He settled in Petrozavodsk (Karelia in north-western Russia)with his wife and granddaughter. As a result, Petrozavodsk became the center ofthe TRIZ Association. He died from complications of Parkinson\'s disease in1998. Science Fiction Following his release fromprison camp in the 1950s, he earned a living as a science fiction writer, underthe pseudonym Genrikh Altov (Генрих Альтов), often in collaboration with hiswife, Valentina Zhuravleva. He spent four years in a prisoncamp for political dissidents after writing a scathing letter to Stalincriticizing the lack of industrial and scientific inventiveness in the USSR.His unpublished \"Altov\'s Register\" is a mammoth catalogue of sfideas, topics and situations. His three collections of sf stories, some writtenwith his wife Valentina Zhuravlyova (1933-2004) – Legendy O ZviozdnykhKapitanakh [\"Legends of the Star Captains\"] (1961), OpaliaiuschiiRazum [\"The Scorching Mind\"] (1968) and Sozdan Dlia Buri[\"Created for the Storm\"] (1970) – represent the best of the Sovietstyle of brainstorming Hard SF.
