1971-1974 BROWN IKES

Proof Eisenhower Silver Dollars were produced at the SanFrancisco Mint and sold to collectors individually from 1971 to 1974. These 40%silver coins are often referred to as “Brown Ikes” in reference to the browncolored boxes within which they were packaged. The proof coins were sealed inrigid plastic holders and placed within a brown box with red insert.

Many Brown Ikes which have resided in the original packagingwill exhibit toning or discoloration. Most times, this appears as anunattractive, haziness or uneven milky tones. Sometimes the coins do exhibitattractive toning, which can occur with multiple colors or a bull’s eyepattern.

The highest mintage Proof Silver Eisenhower Dollar was 1971,when over 4 million were sold. The mintages showed big declines after theinaugural year, reaching their low in 1973 when 1,013,646 coins were sold. Thisissue carries a premium to the other silver proofs

The 1971 Eisenhower Dollar was the first year of issue forthe series. This release also represented the first dollar coin issued by theUnited States Mint since 1935, when the previous Peace Dollar series concluded.

Trial strikes for the new dollar were prepared at thePhiladelphia Mint on January 25, 1971 in an event open to members of the press. The trial strikes were produced from several trial working dies on 40% silverblanks prepared by the coiner. The first production strikes for the EisenhowerDollar officially took place on March 31, 1971 at the San Francisco Mint.Production at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints commenced later in the year.

The coins struck at San Francisco were silver versionsstruck for collectors. Congress had authorized the production of up to 150million of the new dollar coins struck in a composition of 40% silver over afour year period. Uncirculated versions were sold to collectors for $3.00 percoin, while proof versions were sold for $10.00 per coin. Orders were firstaccepted on July 1, 1971 with fulfillment beginning in early August.

The Philadelphia and Denver Mint struck the EisenhowerDollars for general circulation, using a copper nickel clad composition. Thefirst coins were released into circulation on November 1, 1971. Findingexamples of these early clad Ikes in high grade can be challenging, particularly for the Philadelphia Mint strikes, which can exhibit weak strikesor heavy contact marks.

The 1972 Eisenhower Dollar marked the second year of issuefor the series. Mintages for circulation strike coins rose from the previousyear and would represent the highest levels with the exception of the laterBicentennial issues.

This year the Philadelphia Mint struck the coins with threedifferent hub varieties. These can be identified by the appearance of the earthon the reverse of the coin. Variety 1 is the most common and has low reliefdies and displays a flattened Earth. Variety 2 is scarce and has high reliefdies, the Earth appears round and has weak islands. Variety 3 has modified highrelief dies with a strengthened appearance of Earth. The major coin gradingfirms will attribute these varieties.

Once again, the San Francisco Mint would strike coins withsilver content for collectors, although demand would fall substantially fromthe prior year. These 40% silver coins bearing the “S” mint mark were sold tocollectors in uncirculated or proof versions at premium prices. Salesregistered at 2,193,056 uncirculated coins and 1,811,631 proof coins. After twoyears of high production for circulation, the 1973 Eisenhower Dollar wasproduced in limited numbers for inclusion in collector sets only. As a result, the 1973 and 1973-D coins having the lowest mintage amongst the cladcirculation strikes of the series.

Approximately two million Eisenhower Dollars were struck bythe Philadelphia and Denver Mints for inclusion in the 1973 Mint Set. A totalof 1,769,258 of the sets were ultimately sold, so the remaining coins weredestroyed. The Philadelphia Mint issue can be challenging to locate in highgrade, while the Denver issue is generally found with a better strike and oftendeep luster.

The San Francisco Mint produced three different versions ofthe coin this year. This included uncirculated and proof versions struck in acomposition of 40% silver. As in prior years, these coins were sold tocollectors individually, priced at $3.00 for uncirculated coins and $10 forproof coins. Mintages for these offerings reached their lows this year. The SanFrancisco Mint also struck proof coins with the standard clad composition. These were included in the 1973 Proof Set, representing the first time theseries was included in the annual set.

Regular production resumed with the 1974 Eisenhower Dollar, following the prior year when coins were only issued for collectors. ThePhiladelphia and Denver Mints struck coins for general circulation, while theSan Francisco Mint struck three different versions of the coin for collectorsets and individual sales.

As with prior years, the Denver Mint coins are generallymore available in higher grades than the Philadelphia Mint coins. A typicalsource for uncirculated examples of these coins are the 1974 Mint Sets, whichsell for only a modest premium to the face value of the coins included in theset. Cherry picking may yield a set which includes an Eisenhower Dollar in gemgrade or higher.

Silver composition dollar coins were once again struck atthe San Francisco Mint in uncirculated and proof versions. These coins wereindividually packaged and sold to collectors at premium prices. As establishedin the prior year, the San Francisco Mint also struck proof coins in standardclad composition for inclusion in the annual proof set.

Notably, no Eisenhower Dollars were issued carrying the date1975. Rather, the US Mint began production of the redesigned Bicentennial coinsdated “1776-1976”.
