EphraimMoshe Lilienwas one of the two artists to accompany Boris Schatz to Eretz Israel in 1906 for the purpose ofestablishing Bezalel, and taught the school first class. Although his stay in the country was short -lived, he left hisindelible stamp on the creation of an Eretz Israel style, placing biblicalsubjects in the Zionist context and oriental setting, conceived in an idealizedWestern design. In the first two decades of the century, Lilien?s work was the model for the Bezalelgroup

No date, circa 1903. Stunningly beautiful artnouveau style black & white illustrations, borders and motifs. Boardslightly soiled, but interior is clean and truly exceptional.

Thisis an early edition of the German translation of Rosenfeld\'s Yiddish poemsoriginally published in Yiddish in 1898. The poems describe the harsh lives ofimpoverished Jews at the end of the nineteenth century.

EphraimMoses Lilien (1874-1925), an artist, illustrator, and printmaker, was the firstartist to become an active Zionist. Lieder des Ghetto was one of hisearliest important commissions, but the fullness of his talent is alreadyevident. His drawings, done mainly in India ink, were a perfect medium for thesomber themes of Rosenfeld\'s poetry.
