Roger Wilkinsis anAfrican-Americancivilrightsleader, professor of history, andjournalist.

Roger Wilkins was swornin as Director of Community Relations Service on Friday 4 February 1966 in aceremony at The White House as per page 2 of President Johnson\'s Diary for thatday.[3]

Leaving government in1969 at the end of the Johnson administration, he worked briefly for theFordFoundationbeforejoining the editorial staff of theWashingtonPost.

Along withCarlBernstein,Herbert Block(\"Herblock\"), andBob Woodward,Wilkins earned aPulitzerPrizein 1972 forexposing the Watergate scandal that eventually forced PresidentRichard Nixon\'sresignation from office. He left thePostin 1974 to work for the New YorkTimes, followed five years later by a brief stay at thenow-defunctWashingtonStar. In 1980 he became a radio news commentator, work he stilldoes today forNational Public Radio(NPR).

Wilkins was theRobinson Professor of History and American Culture atGeorge Mason UniversityinFairfax,Virginiauntil his retirementin 2007. During his tenure at George Mason, Wilkins was, arguably, one of themost preeminent professors in residence at that time. Wilkins is also thepublisher of theNAACP\'s journal,The Crisis,and is the nephew ofRoy Wilkins,a past executive director of the NAACP.
