Honor boxes like this one were found in England throughout the 1800s, typically in pubs. An early form of vending machines, patrons would place a coin in one side of the box. The other side of the box contained Tobacco, and it was up to patrons to take only what was needed. Hence, they were on their honor.
Honor boxes are becoming increasingly rare and are a sought after antiques and collectors items. Beautiful to display and a great conversation piece.
