19th C Japanese Satsuma porcelain hand painted brooch silver mount- Shimazu Clan:

Shrewsbury, England.Description:This is a beautiful brooch dating to the 19th or very early 20th century. It is hand painted in enamels with an image of a pagoda by a lake and surrounded by fir trees with a mountain in the background. The painting has finely added gilt detail.The back is made from silver, it is marked with the \'+\' in a circle, this is the mark of the Shimazu clan (the family who ruled in the Satsuma region where this type of porcelain was made).Many of this type of brooch were made from items that had originally been designed as buttons- this brooch is quite large, I think that it may have been designed as a brooch.
Condition:Really good. The gilt rim of the porcelain has been worn- otherwise excellent.
Measurements:4.8 cm in diameter and 1.4 cm in depth (not including the pin).
