This is a fabulous 19th Century Anglo Indian British Raj era sandalwood BOOK COVER.
The sort of book cover you would own if you were an important person or from an aristocratic family.
You will love this antique its a work of art in its own right.
It has some small areas of the pierced - fretwork detail missing from the top.. but its in a bag. There are some small cream pin heads missing from the design too.
It is a book cover the wrong way round really.. its not the usual shape.. as I have had these before. the hinge is at the top and not the left hand side.
So you can see all the pictures on the design. Asian dieties - birds - monkeys - foliage - flowers - squirrel - rabbit. With the strapping - banding design as well as the fine superb fretwork. I would imagine it would be very difficult to produce this type of work even with out modern tools.
You can see where the Sandalwood has dried out over the period of time and cracked the surface inside and out.. this is NOTHING to worry about.... its no big deal.
There are two bits of the inset cream parts loose and they are in the bag as well.
Only the front and sides are covered, the back as you will see is like the interior.
There are other small areas of fretork missing and not loose in the bag.. but very small areas. You hardly ever find these sort of Vizagapatam boxes and items complete.
There are 28 small cream pin heads missing from the top design... when there are about 167 on the front if it were complete.
At the right hand side top edge it has a small rectangular section missing....a very small bit at the front bottom edge missing and non at the left edge or back hinge.
On the back it has a little cream mount at each corner .. they are complete on one side but missing on the other side.
It has very little missing this book cover.
This is a serious collectors item or a museum display .. as I said before this is a WORK OF ART in its own right.. it is beautiful.
The buyer of this will cherish it as I have done and the previous owner to me since it was made...there is nothing to dislike about it. ( I know I am banging on about it.. but its really is a very nice example and I am sure you will be as enthusiastic about it as I am )
It is 12 inch x 9 inch x 1 and 1/4 inch deep... the edge of the wood cover is 5/16ths inch deep.
It weighs approx.....1 and 3/4 kilos so it will be sent to you GLOBAL PRIORITY as it will be over 2 kilos by the time I have double boxed it for you. Do not worry about my wrapping as it will withstand a nuclear blast !
