19ThC. Peace Pipe Stem ONLY: Plains Calumet or Chanunpa Pipestem, QUILLED Carved:
$560.00

Original Antique Plains American Indian Quill Decorated Pipe Stem / Calumet or \'chanunpa\' pipestem ONLY. Circa late 19th century, fully drilled ash with deeply carved geometric design elements and decorated with plaited wrapped quill work. Overall length 25-1/4 inches from end to end.
This pipestem, calumet, peace pipe stem was purchased in Santa Barbara, CA in the late 1960\'s from Gretel Barnitz Antiques on State St. by a collector of ethnographic / spiritual Eastern and western antiques. The pipe bowl shown here was also acquired there by the same (deceased) collector and will be offered in a SEPARATE sale. We believe that the bowl is from a Chippewa-Ojibwa origin and thus a different region though probably of the same period. We are not experts here and leave it up to our viewers to determine the details as best as they can from our pictures. This sale is for the pipestem (pipe stem) only.
The feathered (bird scalp) mouthpiece or proximal end is 2-1/2\" long and the pipe stem (calumet) is decorated with dyed porcupine quill wrapped oval sections, each about 3 \" long, 1-1/8 wide and 9/16\"tall. The geometric patterns in the quill work strongly suggest Western Great Plains designs of the Lakota (Sioux).
The wood seems to be Ash and is deeply carved in two areas with a repeating pattern of diamonds and grooves (near the distal or bowl end). This stem was carved from an original solid piece of wood about 1-3/16\" X 13/16\" thick and has obviously been used. Minor wood loss as shown as well as some loss of feathers.
In general, this is in far from average antique condition and we offer many pictures as a large part of our description.
