Italy, 19th c., beautifully presented large 1st Class relic of 306 Century saint-martyr is framed under glass with gilt copper frame, tissue reads \"S (saint) THEODORI M (martyr,)\" Vatican wax seal and threads intact, ribbon hanger was added by a previous owner...may be removed, frame measures approx. 5-3/4 X 4 in., relic measures 1 X 3/8 in.

St. Theodore of Amasea

Surnamed Tyro (Tiro), not because he was a young recruit, but because for a time he belonged to the Cohors Tyronum (Nilles, Kal.man., I, 105), called ofAmaseafrom the place where he sufferedmartyrdom, and Euchaita from the place, Euchais, to which his body had been carried, and where he was held in suchvenerationthat the city was frequently spoken of as Theodoropolis. His martyrdomseems to have taken place 17 Feb., 306, under the EmperorsGalenius Macimian and Maximian, for on this day the Menologiesgive hisfeast. TheGreeksand Armenians honourhim also on the firstSaturday of Lent, while theRomanMartyrologyrecords him on 9 Nov. In the twelfth century his body was transferred to Brindisi, and he is there jonouredaspatron; his head is enshrined at Gaita. There arechurchesbearing his name at Constantinople, Jerudalem, Damascus, and other places of theEast. An ancientchurchof Venice, of which he is titular, is said to have been built by Narses. At the foot of thePalatinein Romeis a very oldchurch, circular in shape anddedicatedto S. Teodoro, whom theRomanpeople call S.Toto, which was made acollegiatechurchby Felix lV. The people showed their confidence in the saintby bringing their sick children to histemple. His martyrdomis represented in thechoirof the Cathedralof Chartresby thirty-eight glass paintingsof the thirteenth century (Migne, \"Dict. iconogr.\", 599). He isinvoked against storms.Emblems:temple, torch, crocodile, pyre,crown of thorns.

St. Gregory of Nyssa delivered a panegyric on hisfeastand gave several data concerning his life and martyrdom(P.G., XLVI, 741, and Ruinart, 505). The oldest text of the \"Martyrium S.TheodoriTironis\" was published by Delehaye in \"Les legendes grecques des saints militaires\", p. 227, but it is considered largely interpolated (Anal. Boll., XXX, 323).St. Theodoreis said to have been born in theEast(Syria or Armeniaare mentioned by some writers). He enlisted in the army and was sent with his cohort to winter quarters in Pontius. When the edict against the Christianswas issued by the emperors, he was brought before theCourtatAmaseaand asked tooffersacrificeto the gods.Theodore, however, denied theirexistenceand made a noble profession of his beliefin the Divinity of Hesus Christ. Thejudges, pretending pity for his youth, gave himtimefor reflection. This he employed in burning theTempleof Cybele. He was again taken prisoner, and after many cruel torments was burned at the stake.
