Battle Record

1.Certificate mounted on cardboard appointing Wm. P. VanNess as Corporal in Co. H of the 17th Regiment U.S. Infantry. DatedOct. 8, 1901. At headquarters on Jolo Island, Philippines. Size: 9 ½” by13”. Condition: Paper was originallyfolded so the crease marks show. The mounting is old, with the backing likethat on cabinet cards. Slight foxing or age staining.

2.Honorable Discharge with Military Record on back, datedJan. 13, 1902. Van Ness had served inthe Philippines from March 1899 when this was written in 1902. He saw action inLuzon, San Luis, San Fernando, near Calulut, Angeles Magalong, and Concipcion.(I’m not sure of the spellings of the place locations.) Van Ness was born inMadison County, Ohio, and was a farmer. Size: 11” by 9”. Condition: Very good.Crease marks and slight age browning. No tears.

3.Marriage License Application copy for his son? WilliamL. Van Ness and Mary James, 1973 copy of original that was dated 1946.Condition: Tears on edges.
