One large and beautiful 18th-century hand-carved woodcutillustration and one page of Japanese writing (see the scanned images). These two leaves are from an antique 18th Japanesewoodblock printed book. The following is a brief description (though I do not read or understand Japanese): a bald man (top, left), who is sitting, clothed in robes, and holding a pen in his hand, as well as a woman, using a pen to draw an image of the Buddha, who is sitting on a lotus leaf (see the enlarged 1st scanned image). The Japanese language page is shown in the 3rd scanned image. These two leaves are hand-made of very thin Xuan rice tissue paper.The paper used wasxuan paper, whichis an absorbent paper used in traditional Japanese calligraphy,painting,and writing. Sizeis about 7 1/2 in. x 10 1/2 in.There may be some stains and discoloration due to age and use overthe centuries.

This leaf is a genuine sheet from the late 18th century, and not a modern reproduction.
