N. Petrilli was a very prolific & popular Italian painter, but not a lot is written about him beyond that. Several places mention he was an open air or street painter, but not much more. Most of his paintings are medium to small works & are professionally framed, as are these. This, plus the fact that a large number of his works still exit, indicates these were considered very nice paintings when purchased.
These are painted on a canvas covered board or canvas backed by a board, which is most likely. I did not want to separate from the frame to find out which.
From the sales data available online, most of Petrilli\'s works sell in the $75 to $300 range depending on size & condition. They include paintings as small a 4\"x 4.5\" to as large as 15\"x 20\", but most in the 50 to 120 square inch range like these.
This pair was framed by Lyman Brothers in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Lyman Brothers Company was a longtime fixture in Indianapolis starting around 1900. They had art galleries, sold supplies to area artists & were very well known for their quality products & support of the arts as well. Each has $21.50 written on the back. If sold in the 1940\'s or 1950\'s as is likely, that would be $250 to $380 each in today\'s money.
I do not know the exact age of the paitings, my best guess is they were done from 1930-1950, as that is the most common dates indicated on many of his other paintings of similar style. Some had older dates, but I think mid century is the best guess.
Both paintings are in exceptional condition, with maybe a slight need of cleaning. They appear to have been from a very clean Environment, just has a few small spots in the cloud areas I could see, but they do not effect the appeal of the paintings. The paper on the back of frames has split in several places over time & is brittle & I applied some tape to help hold them in place.
I am pricing the pair at $195, which I think is about $50-$100 below actual value, based on other sales.
