Here is a superb, extra-large specimen of bismuth, lab grown to create large, sharp, perfect crystals. The colors are fantastic - neon bright blue, magentas, silvers and yellow, with a predominantly blue appearance. The crystals are highly lustrous and very large, arranged in stadium-like formations that are called hoppered crystals. No damage.

Locality
Information about crystals/mineral specimens from this location

This specimen of pure BISMUTH is incredibly beautiful. The crystals are generally lustrous, very sharp skeletal affairs, with step down sides creating the \"hoppered\" effect. This is a laboratory-grown mineral from England, which I picked out at the Tucson Gem Rock and Mineral Show in the room of an English dealer whose father makes the crystals himself. This particular batch had the best color I have ever seen, and I hand picked this one for its lovely shape and exceptionally brilliant colors.

Hoppered crystals have fully developed edges, but the inner spaces are hollow. The result is a step lattice formation, that looks like someone has taken out the insides of the crystals. Actually, these empty areas never filled in, because the crystal grew very rapidly and there either wasn\'t enough time or material to fill in the inside of the crystal. The interior edges, which are formed in crystal form that is characteristic of the mineral, look like a series of smaller and smaller steps going down to the point where the crystal started growing. The casue of hoppering is that electrical attraction is stronger on the edges of the crystal, so they grow more rapidly than the centers.

Mineralogy
Facts about gems, rocks and minerals

Bismuth is rarely found in nature in its elemental form. Of growing interest in rock shops, however, are laboratory-grown bismuth crystals. These crystals, while not natural, are nonetheless very interesting to the mineral hobbyist and to others. The unique look that these clusters offer is really indescribable. Its color consisits of iridescent metallic yellow, blue and green hues. Of interest to hobbyists are the pseudocubic \"hopper\" crystals that are always present on the laboratory produced specimens, they are not seen in but only the rarest of natural crystals. Hopper crystals are a unique crystallographic curiosity Just the edges extend outward from the center of the crystal leaving hollow stairstep faces between these edges. The hopper crystals form due to the disparity of growth rates between the crystal edges and the crystal faces.

The edges of hoppered crystals are fully developed, but the interior spaces are not filled in. This results in what appears to be a hollowed out step lattice formation, as if someone had removed interior sections of the individual crystals. In fact, the \"removed\" sections never filled in, because the crystal was growing so rapidly that there was not enough time (or material) to fill in the gaps. The interior edges of a hoppered crystal still show the crystal form characteristic to the specific mineral, and so appear to be a series of smaller and smaller stepped down miniature versions of the original crystal.

Metaphysics
Information about crystal, gem and mineral metaphysics and healing

People interested in metaphysics and crystal healing tell us that bismuth can be used to transmit from the physical plane to the astral state, providing the opening for astral travel. It relieves conditions of emotional and spiritual isolation, allowing one to feel the connectedness with all that is.
