Antique, 48 Airs, H. Gautschi & Sons, 14\" Swiss Cylinder Music Box with Double Drawer Table

Offered for sale is an antique music box and table, made by Henry Gautschi & Sons. This company, located at 1030 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was established in 1824. While the music box was sold by a Philadelphia company, the parts appear to be manufactured in St. Croix, Switzerland, given information provided on the tune sheet.

A large number of photographs are listed below, coordinating with all descriptions given. One of the many airs this music box includes has been recorded and is linked below. Additional airs can be provided to those with serious interest. The music box plays well and sounds fantastic!

Box dimensions: The music box is 34\" long, 11.5\" deep, and 9.5\" high.

Box condition: The box is believed to be made from the wood of a variety of fruit trees, with a burl wood veneer and ebonized case. There is a small amount of veneer loss, but is not noticeable. The original finish is retained. The top of the music box is missing some marquetry work and some shrinkage has occurred over the years, as often happens with antique music boxes. There are two holes, which appear to have been for a bracket of some sort, possibly to hold up the lid; however, the bracket is missing.

Comb: There are 100 teeth. The last one, either a pointer or tip, is missing on the high pitch. This does not effect the sound at all.

Cylinder: The music box contains 6 cylinders, labeled 1 through 6. Each cylinder is 14\" long and contains 8 airs.

Stamps/Identification: The year \"1890\" is handwritten on the bottom of the music box.

Tune Sheet: The original tune sheet, for cylinders 1 through 3, is included. It has some paper missing, but is in good condition. It includes the origin of the box as well as names of all the airs on cylinders 1 through 3. The tune sheet for cylinders 4 though 6 is missing. As previously stated, you can hear one of the airs by clicking the link below. There is a meter to tell which air is playing in the music box.

Table Dimensions: 47\" wide, 25.5\" deep, and 30\" tall.

Table Condition: As with the music box, the table also has a burl wood veneer and ebonized case. There is a small amount of veneer loss, but it is not noticeable. The original finish is retained. A small amount of crinkling is visible on the top of the table. There are two, side by side drawers, each with the ability to hold 3 cylinders.
