48 Star Antique US GAR Flag - Civil War Americana Patriotic Ca. Pre 1912:

This sale is for a 48 star US Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Flag, measuring 17 inches by 27 inches. The GAR was a fraternal organization of veterans from the Union Army who served in the Civil War. It was founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois and dissolved in 1956 upon the death of its last member. This particular Flag was likely used as a grave marker on Memorial day or as part of a parade. This Flag has a great patina and an attractive light blue canton. The staggered 48 star Flag ceased to exist in 1912, as a result of President Taft\'s executive order outlining that the stars must be placed in six horizontal rows of eight stars each (and not staggered).
Please notice that this Flag has a number of tears and stains. In particular, please notice the tear along the center of the Flag that extends across a good portion of the length of the Flag (see the last photo). While this tear is significant, it could be largely hidden, if properly framed.
