These five miniature people include two men, a woman, a boy and a police man (or maybe he\'s a train man) directing traffic! They are hand made and hand painted, and are little primitive works of folk art! They are tiny, measuring between 1 3/8" and 1 1/2", with the little boy standing 1". The policeman has some slight damage to his paint, both front and back that almost look like smudges. They date to the 1920\'s, and were probably originally part of a play set. They are in nice vintage condition, with great patina to the paint, which is crackling in places. The little people are unmarked. They would be great as part of a Christmas Putz village - the village scenes that people display under their trees each year.
They come from the Erzgebirge region of Germany, also known as the Thurgian Mountains (Ore Mountains). The Erzgebirge region has been home to families of folk artisans for generations. The area was originally a mining area, but when the ore ran out, folks turned to making toys, novelties, candy containers and holiday decorations. They primarily used wood and wood by-products, as the area is 60% forest. Many of the original families are still making toys and holiday items today. Early pieces, like these, are very popular with collectors because of their charm. Play sets of these little miniatures were sold through specialty catalogs in the 1920\'s. One such seller was Louis Lange Publishing, who was a publisher of German books in Chicago. Louis Lange featured miniature play sets and decorations in their 1926 Christmas catalog.
