This buckle is an early buckle made bythe famous Hopi artist Bueford Dawahoya, the brother of Bernard Dawahoya. Bueford began making jewelry in the early1960s. He probably made this buckleabout that time when he was with the Hopi Silvercraft Guild. Later in life Bueford did work forprestigious Kopavi Internationallocated in Sedona Arizona. Buefordhas works in many collections and museums including The Smithsonian NationalMuseum of the American Indian. Bueford died in 1998,

This buckle is made with bear paws and a geometricpattern similar to some petrographs I\'ve seen in New Mexico. The bear paws are set with about 3/8 inchlong pieces of what I believe is Sleeping Beauty turquoise.

Buckle Dimensions: 3 1/8 inches by 2 inches

Fits Belt: almost 1¾ inches wide

Weight: 59.5 grams

Marks: The back of the buckle is marked with Bueford\'s hallmark and the Hopi SilvercraftGuild hallmark. Although thebuckle is not marked for silver content it tests as at least coin silver (900)and is probably sterling (925).

Condition: This buckle is in excellent condition. It’s from my personal collection of NativeAmerican items.
