The cover isaccompanied by a letter from Charles Brewer to his friend William Crane andtalks about the troop movement around Culpepper, VA and being chased by the rebs & beingoutnumbered 3 corps to 1. The letter was written on October 3rd atCamp Sedgewick, VA. The letter reads as follows:

Friend William,

I got your letter last night & got back to camp just atsun down. Glad to hear from you and hope things are getting along first rate uptheir & I think you should tickle her a little before she went, but I suppose you don’t do such things, but Iwish I was there one night or two. I would see what I could do well. Bill, Isuppose you would like to hear the news. Saturday we started from camp andmarched toward Culpepper & so on out towards the blue mountains, we wentthrough Culpepper about noon, we went about 12 miles the first day and campedfor the night & in the morning we up & started & went out to thecobenson creek & crossed it & went about a mile & stopped for the night..It stormed the next day so we layed still & the next day we stayed untilnight then the cavalry began to come in as quick as they past we started towardcamp. We came acrost the river a littleway & stayed the night. It was so dark that they thought go nofurther. It was muddy as the old braers. I see half a dozen of the boys tumbledown in the mud. They were pricly looking fellows when they got up.

It cleared of that night & I arose a little, so there’s a little bettergoing the next morning for a few miles, but then was pretty muddy, but we camealong in a hurry, you can judge for yourself whether we came in a hurry or not.We got into camp just at sun down & we had twenty eight miles to comepretty good march & I got my overcoat all wet & it was aflised heavy,it is so long that it reached clear down to my feet. You had better believe Ihad a load. Holly stood it pretty well, but he got pretty well played before hegot into camp. He got a little behind but he got in less than half an hour. Thecavalry went out by Madsons Courthouse & on towards Gordensville.

They had a considerable of a brush with the rebs two orthree times but they whipped them every time & drove them most toGordensville. They said that the rebs were coming in from Richmond as fast asthey could bring them. They said they were as thick as a swarm of mosquitoes& they said they were following us up so we hurried back to camp. For eachone of our corps, they had about three corps of them.. So they said we didn’thave nothing but the second corps & part of the third. I didn’t happen toget into a fight this time. Well Bill, I shall have to stop write. From Friend,Charles Brewer, Washington, D.C.
