In 1855, they were transferred to the Militia and became the1st Volunteer Troop of Cavalry of Montreal, taking part in the 1866 action at Pidgeon Hill, during the Fenian Raids. They went through a number of title changes and in 1885, they were named the 6th Regiment of Cavalry. During the Boer War, the Regiment sent Officer\'s and Men with the Canadian Contingent and they served with the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles. As a result, the Regiment received the Battle Honour, \"South Africa 1900\".

In 1936, the 6th D.C.R.C.H. absorbed the 1st Armoured Car Regiment, and adopted the suffix, (Armoured Car), after their title.

During WW2, the Regiment mobilised in February 1941 and embarked for the U.K. in November 1941. In January 1943, they were disbanded and the personnel absorbed into H.Q. 5th Canadian Armoured Division. The Division landed in Italy in October 1943 and moved to France in February 1945, where they continued to serve in the North-West Europe theatreon operations until the end of the war.

After WW2, other changes took place and in 1958, the Regiment amalgamated with the 17th Duke of York\'s Royal Canadian Hussars to form theRoyal Canadian Hussars (Montreal). The new Regiment haveprovided troops for U.N. and N.A.T.O. operations around the world.
