Up for saletoday is a fun miscellaneous group of vintage diaries and journals. Some havewriting, some don’t, but all are unique in one way or another. There are atotal of 9 in this lot and they are as follows (and in no particular order):

1)1889 Diary with miniature “gem” tintype of awoman which isn’t in good shape. Also a few newspaper clippings found inside.Handwritten entries inside from February 12th to May 7th.The only name inside says “Mary”. Towns mentioned are Middleboro (Middleborough) and Mansfieldso I’m assuming she lived in Massachusetts. Diary is in fair shape as there are some wearmarks on the cover and the fabric tie that use to secure the diary shut is alltorn up. Binding and pages look fine. Diary measures about 3” x 5”.

2)This next diary is from 1901 and belonged toMargaretta H. Weston of Reading Massachusetts. This diary hassteady entries from January 1st to March 3rd and thenblank after that. There were several pieces of ephemera found between the pagesof this diary and one of them was a bill from The Winchester Hospital in 1914.I found the hospital on the web and here is its history……. “In 1912, the Winchester Visiting NurseAssociation opened the first Winchester Hospital in thethree-story Todd House on Washington Street. With 12 beds, the new hospital flourishedimmediately, making it quickly apparent that a larger hospital was necessary. In the early fall of 1913, a canvass of the town produced $22,000, and the nextspring, a group of businessmen succeeded in raising an additional $25,000. Withthese funds, the WinchesterVisiting Nurses purchased a 5.5-acre tract of land bordered by Highland Avenue, Valley Road, Maple Street and Fairmount Street. Officersand Committee members of the Winchester VisitingNurse Association laid the cornerstone of the present WinchesterHospital on May 18, 1916.The new,44-bed Winchester Hospitaladmitted its first patient on May 28, 1917.” So this hospital bill is fromthe original building where the Winchester Hospital first began. Andhere’s the fun part; it looks like Margaretta married Arthur MacDonald and theyhad one child born in 1914 so this receipt is probably from the birth of herson. The diary is in good shape and measures about 3 ¼” x 6”. See #5 below.

3)1861 Diary with an inscription in the front thatsays, “Huston Kishpaugh January 1st 1860. Presented to HustonKishpaugh by C. W. Hetzel Hope N. Jersey.” Atleast I think it says Hope N. Jersey. There are sporadic simple one lineentries throughout. On January 23rd he’s 21 years old. This diary isin fair to poor condition as it’s very worn. It measures about 2” x 3 ½”.

4)1917 diary that has as many drawings in it ashandwritten entries. Lots of miscellaneous notes and goofy drawings. In theback it looks like the owners brief history and I quote….. “Went to Farmington to school in 1831, Married in 1836 Limington, keptstore in 1840, Hy___Cnal Co. in 1858, Wholesale Store 1861, Moved to Gorham ona farm in 1866.” I’ve scanned a fewof the pages (including some of the drawings) to give you a better idea. Thisdiary measures about 2 ½” x 5 ¼”.

5)Two memorandum booklets (bad shape) and both ofthem belonged to A. P. McDonald and I just realized that these belong with #2above as they must be Margaretta’s husbands journals; Arthur P. MacDonald. These are expense type ledgers for the years 1902 & 1903. There are about131 handwritten pages between them. There was also a business card foundbetween the pages for Philip S. Weston, 197 South Street Reading Mass. Electrician. The ledgersmeasure about 3 ¼” x 5 ½” and they have soft covers.

6)This next diary is from 1886 and the leathercover acts as a sort of wallet. The pages are clean and binding good but itlooks like the cover itself had a bit of water damage at one time. The diarybelonged to Arthur t. Barker but Arthur never wrote in his diary. It measuresabout 3” x 6”.

7)The last two in this lot are vintage blank hardcovered journals. Perfect for keeping your own diary entries in ormiscellaneous notes. I found them in a box of ephemera from the early 1900’sand into the 1930’s so I’m assuming they are from that time frame. They measureabout and both are in good shape.

Well there youhave it. I’ve tried to describe all the items in this lot the best way I can soplease ask any questions before offerding and this is a buy as is sale.
