The A-2 Air Force jacket was only awarded to an Army Air Forces officer upon completion of basic flight training. Although the actual design would vary slightly, depending on the manufacturer and the contracts, all A-2 jackets had several distinguishing characteristics which we have taken over when reproducing our A-2 jacket:
- a snap-flap pocket on both front sides
- a shirt-style snap-down collar
- shoulder straps, knit cuffs and waistband
- a back constructed from a single piece of leather (which limits stress on the garment)
- and a lightweight silk or cotton inner lining.
In our jackets we placed a red cotton inner lining, where the red color was in WWII only given to these Aces which had confirmed their fifth aerial kill, making this a special distinction/award. Also we placed the AAF emblem on the left shoulder, as was custom to the Air Force A-2 jacket. The A-2 jacket was also more readily worn by fighter pilots who often had heated cockpits, than any other jackets.
Wartime issued A-2 jackets appear in a wide range of color tones and hues. This version we have reproduced with soft, yet stable, argentinian horsehide which is vegetable tanned in the color black. Since a good quality of this kind of leather is hard to obtain, we do the vegetable tanning in our own tannery. This way we are always awarded with the best quality, since only with this tanning method one can get the exclusive look and great feeling to the touch.
