A Fine & Rare Pre-Columbian Colima Standing Whistle Figure of a Warrior/Dancer, Late Preclassic, ca. 300 B.C. to 100 B.C.

This rare hollow ceramic standing figure, buff with vestiges of red pigment and the patina of great age overall, dates to the Late Preclassic Period of the West Mexican Colima sculptural tradition and the Tuxcacuesco-Ortices sub-style, ca. 300 B.C. to 100 B.C. At over 7 inches high, a much larger figure than the typical sculptural whistles of this genre (usually approx. 4 inches), this standing figure\'s “goggle” eyes, thick lips, and pointed nose are set amidst a headdress which is secured by quadruple banded appliqued clay straps which surround the face and forehead, and culminate in six-straps tapering upward to a whistle mouthpiece on the top of the head. On the upper arms multiple rows of  “cicatrice” are attached as is common to warriors and ceremonial dancers from this Late Preclassic period in West Mexico. This securely adorned figure, holding a ritual baton or weapon, in addition to the multiple pellets on the upper arms and dancer\'s \"wings\" on the backside of the shoulders, protective shorts, wears the trappings of both a dancer and a warrior from the archaic Colima sculptural tradition. This archaic form has sometimes been referred to, in reference books, as the \"goggle eyes\" type. FSA:EA
