On offer is a group of incredibly rare

London Costermonger Medals

awarded to a

Frederick Church in the late 1800s

The first is a very impressive, large (7.5cm x 7.5cm) h/m silver medal, on its original, 5cm wide ribbon,

with an ornate, silver brooch suspender bearing the initials “H.S.T.S. & B.S” – see below.

The ribbon bears a silver scroll engraved

The other two are smaller (4cm diameter) silver medals.

Both are complete with their original ribbons and brooch suspenders.

All the medals, suspenders and the clasp are nicely toned, and in very good (GVF+) condition:

the ribbons have seen better days!

Costermongers were traditionally men who sold fruit and vegetables from barrows in street markets.

Frederick Church was a costermonger at Hoxton Street Market in the East End of London.

The Hoxton Street Traders Sick and Burial Society was an organization that supported costermongers unable to work,

and contributed to the funeral expenses of those who passed away.
