Malay: Sumatran Brasswork -dating from the second half of the 19th century.
Cast using the \'lost wax\' process the base section takes the form of an elephant - the circular opening to the top is cast with a band of geometric decoration. The decoration incorporates triangular forms, each one containing floral decoration.
The opening locates a double baluster form socketed shaft. This section also cast using the lost wax process and securely press mounts to the base. The shaft is very much in the form a dutch 18th century candlestick and demonstrates the colonial influence on metalwork from this region during the 18th and 19th centuries.
It has been suggested that this unusual example would have been used for burning incense - the interior of the base section does contain a residue of burn\'t material - also traces of candle wax. The British Museum collection incorporates a similar \'elephant\' casting - this example incorporates handle lugs either side of the opening and, although incomplete, is described a teapot \'teko\' - see B.M. collection no.As1956,09.74.
Overall length - 7 1/4\" (184mm), height - 9 1/4\" (235mm).

Condition - Very Good. The usual casting flaws, mainly to the underside of the elephant, detailed by the additional images above. Fine natural colour and patina.
