Item # 1404LNP14PP A finely rendered work in oil on panel, this painting captures a nostalgic scene of an elderly monk telling stories and enjoying the afternoon with a young woman over a bottle of wine. The figures are refined and highly detailed, each detail flawlessly captured by the artists brush. The monk leans heavily on an old oak barrel with a deeply patinated surface, a small glass of wine in hand as he gestures actively what appears to be a humorous tale. The young woman seems thoroughly amused and quite relaxed, slouching against the stucco facade, a distinct contrast between her bright and vibrant clothing and the dirty beige of the wall. The lower right corner is signed “A. Stannick 884”, presumably dating to 1884. The work is preserved in a wonderful period gilt and gesso frame (regilded), possibly original, the edges oxidized in a nice nut brown hue of matching tone to the panel. The reverse of the panel is impressed with somewhat illegibly lettering, this reading “Schach_ngse & Ha_rmann….”

Condition Report:
Frame regilded, possibly original, the edges and corners with chipping to the gesso and gilt. Painting cleaned in the last decade or so. Light abrasion to left of the barrel. [Under UV] possible up mid-right quadrant beneath shelf; appears to be untouched throughout, though there is a light purplish fluorescence throughout - this corresponds to specific pigments though, and our assessment is that these are not touchups but are original.
