A Wonderful marked TURNER pearlware Staffordshire ‘Chinese House\' TRAY, 1770 :
$344.00

An extremely rare and very desirable English pearlware tray of square form with canted corners and raised sides; the inside with an unusualvariant of the \'Chinese House\' pattern in inky blue; the base fully impressed \'TURNER\' in upper-case letters; Turner factory ,Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire potteries, circa 1770.

This is an incredibly rare and desirable item whether you collect marked Turner creamwares or pearlwares or rareitems with the \'Chinese House\' pattern. I have not seen this very rare form before and I do not know what its functionwas - maybe a container for some sort of dining table decoration?

The tray measures approximately 6 3/4 x 6 inches and 2 inches tall. The sides have inset square panels which have variants of the Chinese House pattern and the edges are nicely shaped with canted corners. The extreme edge has an attractive shell-edge ‘feathered\' (featheredge) and moulded design washed in blue.

The center of the tray has a very unusual variant of the so-called Chinese House design incorporating a house with a fence on either side flanked by tall plants, unusual in that they are not bamboo. In the garden are three \'cannonball\' type plants reminiscent of the painting on English porcelain of the period.

The base is fully marked TURNER in upper-case letters, meaning this is one of the earliest known pieces of marked Turner pearlware dating toaround 1770.

This is an important addition to known Turner pieces in terms of design and also in terms of its incorporation of the Chines Housedesign and as such is a valuable addition to any private or museum collection.

Condition is fantastic for a piece of this delicacy - just a few tiny edge nibbles but no significant problems whatsoever - offer with confidence on this wonderful Turner tray!
