Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.littleA wonderful condition Westerwald stoneware cylindrical beer tankard decorate with circular molded motifs containing flowers and hearts; Germany, Westerwald region, circa 1700 - 1720. This is a fine early tankard in superb condition if you are looking for a perfect specimen to add to your specialist collection of Westerwald. It is beautifully potted with an inverted neck and a fine sturdy handle. There are bands of turning rings either side of the main area of decoration around the waist of the tankard which consists of molded roundels containing hearts, flowers, and clusters of grapes against a delicious manganese or blackberry-colored ground. The tankard is 6 3/8 inches tall (not including the lid). There are some very minor glaze dings but no significant chips. There are no cracks. There is no restoration other than the pewter lid which appears to be a more recent replacement.
