A Fine17/ 18th C Edo period (Iron) Tetsu sukashi Katana/Wakizashi Tsuba. Koshirae fitting. Maru Gata shape.The stunning cut out decoration depicting sakura flower mon placed boldly on one side of the guard is neither naive nor plain, and very well cut, the Hitsu-ana, and the antique-looking chisel marks around the Hitsu-ana are all characteristic indications of an early work. To the base can be found two small holes These are udenuki-ana which represent the sun and moon and were likely used for threading a leather wrist thong to prevent dropping the sword in battle.Copper Sekigane. A lovely dark rich patina.
It measures approximately 7cm in height x 6.7cm across x 2mm thick.Please see photos for more visual information.
