A CARVED GREY STONE STELE OF VISHNU

NEPAL, KATHMANDU VALLEY

16TH-17TH CENTURY

The Supreme God Vishnu (Sk: Viṣṇu) represents an essential aspect of the divine Hindu Trinity (Trimurti), embodying the divine cosmic force of Preservation. According to ancient Hindu texts, Vishnu has a dark complexion akin to water-filled clouds and, as showcased in this depiction, holds attributes in each of his four arms, namely; the padma (lotus flower), Kaumodaki gada (mace), Panchajanya shankha (conch) and Sudarshana Chakrain (discuss weapon).

In this carved grey stone stele, Vishnu stand frontally atop a blooming lotus flower, with a long ceremonial garland around his shoulders which hangs below his knees. He wears ornate jewellery and a regal crown, which wraps around his elegant chignon.

The edges of the stele are decorated with a curling vegetal or flame-like motif, which echoe the halo (mandorla) that frame Vishnu\'s head.

The stele is a stunning example of Nepalese stone-craftsmanship, circa 16th-17th century.

HEIGHT: 33cm exclusive of stand/ 45cm inclusive.

CONDITION: Good. Traces of offerings to surface, including turmeric residue.

PROVENANCE: English collection formed by Mr W. D. Wilson, c. 1946.
