A 19th c. Tin & Mica Glass Skater/Traveling Candle Lantern
This small lantern is a rare piece of early lighting.Given the delicate nature of Mica windows,most of these lanterns, as originally constructed, have not survived.In light of the scarcity of glass in rural areas,lantern windowswere often made fromanimal horns,and later from Mica glass.When used in a lantern w/lighted candle, Mica emits a soft glow(by comparison w/regular glass).Triangular in shape (photo 2), it folds neatlyfor storage and/or travel (photo 4 & 11).The lantern was acquired as a skater\'slantern. The lantern is complete andin it\'s original condition. The mica windowsmay be removed for cleaning.A special and uncommon early lighting piece.6\" h x 4\"d overall 10\"
