Pennsylvania Canal Barge Lock Horn
This early canal barge lock horn wasacquired from a Pennsylvania Collection.The, horn, which is in working condition, dates to thecivil war period. It is signed and was crafted by thefamous American Marine Co. \"Perko,\" of Brooklyn, NY (photo 4).The history is that this horn was used on the Pennsylvaniacanal in the New Hope area of Pennsylvania (photos 2 & 3).Prior to the onset of the railroads, the canal barges were usedto transport items from New Hope, Pa. to Lamberville NJ, and onto NY.The horn, signaled the Lock keeper, to open the locksallowing the barge to pass through.The horn, is made of glavanized tin,with a brass stem (photo 9) ending in a removablewooden mouth piece (photo 7).The early hanging strap is hand-stitched to the horn (photo 4).A very different early American Collectible.16\" Length x 3 1/4\" dia.
