PROVENANCE:

DEATHBED BANDAGE: On the night of April 14, 1865, the mortally wounded President Lincoln was carried to a back bedroom at thePerson House, dying there early in themorning of April 15th. The fragment of gauze bandage was used in the care of Lincoln showing \"dark-colored spotting reminiscent of blood.\" The bandage fragment originated from the Herman Rudd Collection in Buffalo, NY and was previously in the collection of the Holland Purchase Historical Society where they have another piece presently matching this example.

The Holland Purchase Historical Society is now the \"Holland Purchase Historic Society\" housed in the \"Holland Land Office Museum\" in Batavia, NY, near Buffalo.

Herman D. Rudd was an established collector and saleeer also living in the Buffalo, NY area. He frequently advertised in the Niagara Falls Gazette in the 1940s.

HAIR STRAND: The hair strand originated from a lock of Lincoln\'s hair sold at Christie\'s in 2002 from the famous Forbes Collection.It was a common Victorian pastime to collect clipped lengths ofhair from family members and friends. This particular strand originates from Caroline Wright, wife of the Republican Governor of Indiana. The Wrights were friendly with the Lincolns and in Washington at the time of Lincoln\'s 1865 Inauguration. It appears likely that Mrs. Wright collected the hair of the President, First Lady and other political notables in February or March 1865, one month prior to the assassination.
